What is fostering?

A message from Councillor Dave Evans, cabinet member for children and young people

"Foster carers do an amazing job for children in Stoke-on-Trent. They provide more than just a house, more than just a roof over a head but a home. Somewhere that is filled with love that can support a young person to make the most of their talents and abilities.

We are incredibly lucky in Stoke-on-Trent to have so many extraordinary people fostering for us, supporting children and other carers across our city. There are no words that do them justice, and I am in awe of everything they do for young people. I have been very fortunate to meet so many of our foster carers, whether at their quarterly catch ups, our thank you events, or indeed just going about my daily business and bumping into them on the street.

But we need more, today there are over 1000 children in care in Stoke-on-Trent, everyone deserves a home and a family. The difference you can make to our young people cannot be overstated: you can change a life. Equally they will change your life as well.

I certainly hope you’ll join us in supporting young people in Stoke-on-Trent."

Fostering is looking after babies, children or young people who are in need of a safe, stable family environment.

As a foster carer, you will have an opportunity to make a positive difference to the lives of children. We will provide you with all the support needed to build a brighter future for children and young people across Stoke-on-Trent.

There really is no typical foster carer. Anyone can come forward and make such a big difference in a child’s life regardless of age, gender, religious or cultural background, sexual orientation or if you are married, single or divorced. If you feel that you are ready to open your home and heart to a child, fostering could be a fantastic career choice for you.

At Stoke-on-Trent City Council, children are our number one priority. We are committed to supporting vulnerable children and we want to ensure that we give all our children and young people in care the best possible start. By fostering a child in the City, you can help us to do that.
